Border Work: Episodes of Demarcation, Passages and Representations

Overview

The Border Work: Episodes of Demarcation, Passages, and Representations presentation by Dr. Dorfman explores how border demarcation efforts change in relation to changing technical possibilities, the contrast between state cartography and local practices in border regions, and the persistence of state control in porous borders.

By examining these cases, Dr. Dorfman’s research invites us to think more critically about who defines borders, how they function, and how they are experienced on the ground. Her work aligns with TBDH’s mission by questioning dominant narratives and centering the voices of those who live at and across borders.

Dra. Adriana Dorfman

Dra. Dorfman’s work challenges us  to move beyond the idea of borders as merely physical or state-defined boundaries. Instead, she examines them as the product of social actors – local communities, governments, and others – who actively shape, contest, and negotiate them. Her work considers not only the role of policy, historical and cultural backgrounds, but also the significance of natural landscapes as key factors in border formation and reformation.
